Printmaker Mayumi Kimura, from Gunma Prefecture, creates works using the screen-printing technique. Each piece is essentially one of a kind.
Screen printing is usually used to reproduce images on items such as T-shirts and signs. Kimura takes the technique in the opposite direction, using it to pursue a singular, one-of-a-kind texture that exists only in that particular work.
Some pieces incorporate materials such as Japanese washi paper and iron sand, giving them a pronounced tactile quality. Simply displayed in a room, the work has a curious pull, drawing you into the depths of its rich indigo.
